In what ways is umpiring fulfill my desires in Taekwon-Do?

  1. Watching top athletes in a sportive environment;
  2. Being part of a team who is trying to get the best results for competitors, coaches, spectators and ITF in a safe, honest and fair area (for my as a old police-officer for 15 years this is very important);
  3. Network with other people around the world;
  4. Travel to countries and learn more about other opines, training methods and development in personal, club, organizational, business and ethical level;
  5. Developing a standard in the world that is really making an effort to do positive contributions to humanity and communities.

How do I see the evolution of the competition rules during the years (World Championships and World Cups)?

  1. Rules give us guidelines during life, socializing, business and competition.
  2. The meaning behind rules is for me far more important to achieve then just to follow rules. What is the rule for and what is it trying to accomplish?
  3. The evaluation of these rules is an interesting process to follow and to see how new rules must reflect the old values and new time of thinking.

Networking with other umpires and learning about their experience as umpires, instructors, and personal development:

  1. I like to work as an umpire and deal with stressful situations as being very motivating as a personal development skill for myself.
  2. To see other people work and dealing with stressful situations in any role is for me a very important tool to develop myself and others.
  3. As an instructor I can handle much more after being an umpire for the years I am doing this now. I always tell my students there are different levels of developing yourself in TKD;
    1. Personal skills –Taekwon and – Do
    2. Club level (handling in a safe environment)
    3. National level (going outside your club and meeting others in your countries)
    4. International level (meeting Taekwon-Do practitioners in the rest of the world).

Furthermore I like to always keep in mind that we as umpires are privileged to be so close to the match and give our opinion about the abilities of top athletes and perform as top referees in the best way we can.
