Master Downey putting back into the community
(December 1st, 2008)

Master Scott Downey

Master Scott Downey, 7th Degree Black Belt, from St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada, guest presenter at Youth Anti-Violence conference in St. John's. Master Downey was requested to present on practical self-defense techniques to over 100 junior high school students who were victims of bullying. School Guidance Counsellors and Educational Psychologists selected the students. Students came from all the junior high schools throughout St. John's, Mount Pearl, Torbay, and Conception Bay South.

Master Downey's background as a Child and Adolescent Psychologist and Taekwon-Do Master was an excellent combination as he could discuss the emotional impact of bullying, as well as teach the students practical self-defense techniques. Master Downey also emphasized the tenets of Taekwon-Do (Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-control, and Indomitable Spirit) and the Philosophy of Self-defense (talk if you will, walk away if you can, run if you must, but if all else fails defend yourself).

Melissa Tremblett, one of the organizers of the event stated: "I want to thank you again on behalf of Community Mediation Services for donating your time to us and for sharing your wealth of valuable skills with those kids. Your session was the most popular and the kids really enjoyed it and took a lot away from it."
