On September 29, 2013, Queens Taekwon-Do Center hosted the XVIII ITF New York Taekwon-Do Tournament, sponsored by the National Taekwon-Do Association – ITF, Inc. (NTA-ITF) at Queens College in Flushing, New York. In attendance, 381 competitors from 34 ITF Taekwon-Do schools, visiting from a number of States across the U.S., as well as Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Colombia, and Canada.
The opening ceremony commenced with a salute to our national anthem, followed by the introduction of the individual schools and their instructors/masters and presentation of the Masters who were present in the event: Master Roberto Del Cid, Master Carlos Ramirez, Master Vince Affatigato, Master William Martinez and Master Ramon Mateo, and especial mention to Master Kurt Ottesen, who is a member of the ITF Umpire Committee. Master Ottesen conducted a 2 day umpire seminar with the participation of 42 black belts prior to the event. Following opening ceremony, everyone took their positions to proceed with the activities of the day.
For the first time in the USA, we set the central ring following the new official ring dimensions and equipped with the new ITF electronic scoring system to officiate black belts patterns and sparring competition. With the assistance of Master Ottesen, we were able to conduct a great competition in the center ring for the enjoyment of all participants and over 600 present spectators. The electronic system displayed real time results of the competition on TV screens for patterns and sparring matches.
Particular recognition should be given to all referees, judges, and assistants, whose work has continued to excel over the years, helping to make for a better tournament each year.
The tournament ended at 7:30pm, and for the 18th year, it was another exciting event for the NTA-ITF and the ITF New York Taekwon-Do Tournament. Master Ruben Suarez would like to extend his gratitude to all participants and supporters who helped to carry out this continued success.
The Battle of Utrecht 2013
The Battle of Utrecht 2013 was held on 29 September in Utrecht Netherlands, just before the upcoming World Championship in Benidorm ( 24-27 oct.)
This year there were clubs from the Netherlands, England, Belgium and France ( 328 competitors). All the European and World champions of all the ITF organizations of the Netherlands took part in this tournament; they competed in sparring, pattern and pre-arranged held for youth, juniors and seniors. There is a special team of security members responsible to control the spectators and competitors.
The Battle of Utrecht is one of the biggest and very competitive tournament in the Netherlands, every year we have other countries. For example :Sabum Doulay Lylian 4th degree from France who won the 1st place pattern.
Masters Thomas Denis and Wijnand Tapilatu and International Umpire Sabum Annick from Belgium were also present.
Just like the last year, instead of square numbers on every competition area we had different color tablecloths so all the kids could find there field very easy, go to the red-blue-yellow-purple… field. Also this year there was a big screen for the competitors, coaches and of course the spectators. So it was very clear which category was competing on what square on that moment.
In the pause there was a lottery for the audience .The lucky persons received very nice prizes; Taekwon-Do bags, a pad for training, Taekwon-Do book, several posters with pattern 1-9, safety equipment . Sponsored by the Top Ten distributor and Academie Gelderland.
The Taekwon-Do club Van Breul who just joined ITF Netherlands won the Overall Cup.
The organizer of the championship Master James Tjin-A-Ton and his wife Liesbeth Willems and the volunteers from his club Taekwon-Do IN NAE DO KWAN were very happy.
