ITA Examiners Conference Report

The annual ITA examiners conference took place in the Bracken Hotel, Balbriggan, Dublin on Sunday May 26th 2013. The conference is an opportunity for all ITA members from 4th Dan upwards to meet and discuss the black belt grading and syllabus. This years conference was attended by 23 ITA examiners. The meeting was a very productive event with several modifications being adopted to the black belt syllabus and grading format. The atmosphere of the meeting was very positive and all in attendance had a common goal of further improving the efficiency of the black belt test and marking system and the quality of the syllabus. Key items that were discussed included; adding additional techniques to the special technique section of the grading, modifying the electronic marking system for the black belt grading, modifying the kicking and fundamental hand technique syllabus for black belts as well as very productive discussions on how to cater for students that begin Taekwon-Do training at an older age as well as consideration for those with disability. The feedback from the examiners to the ITA board following the conference was very positive and all commented on how this open forum allows for the senior grades in the organisation to have their views aired, discussed and positive ideas implemented.

The 2013 Dublin Open was hosted by the Irish Taekwon-Do Association in the DCU Sports Complex on April 28th. The tournament began promptly at 10am with a full-house of competitors & spectators there to witness the action taking place across 8 rings. This was the largest one-day tournament ever run by the association with 522 competitors, junior & senior taking part over 8 rings with 75 umpires on hand to ensure the day ran as smoothly & efficiently as possible.

This tournament was exclusively for colour belts as the ITA will host a Blackbelt Open Championshipsin June and the level of competition on display in all age groups was extraordinary with many competitors needing to win four rounds or more to reach the medal stages of their sections. The tournament ran ahead of schedule finishing early at 4pm, an excellent achievement on behalf of the organisers considering the number of competitors involved.

Blanchardstown Taekwon-Do Club, from Dublin, finished asthe best overall club with 14 Gold, 7 Silver & 5 Bronze medals; Integrity Martial Arts placed second while Cork ITA, Newlands Taekwon-Do & Greystones rounded out the top five respectively.

As always credit must be given to the ITA tournament& umpire committee of Mr Adrian Byrne, Mr Stephen Ryan, Mr Mark Buckley, Ms Laura Cullen & Mr Niall Jones as well as the tournament host Mr Stephen Cooley and the volunteers from local clubs who helped to set up the venue for the event.

The next tournament to be hosted by the Irish Taekwon-Do Association will be the ITA Blackbelt Open Championships in June, followed by the ITA Irish Cup which takes place in Limerick in November
