On September 21-22, 2012 Queens Taekwon-do and Master Ruben Suarez welcomed Mr. Kurt Ottesen (VI Dan) from Canada and member of the ITF Umpire Committee to direct a referee seminar at Queens Taekwon-do Center in Jackson Heights, New York.
The seminar was held in two sessions. On Friday night the focus was on the more theoretical aspects of umpiring, with special attention placed on the responsibilities and integrity of being an ITF referee. The participants returned Saturday morning for a practical seminar in which the focus was placed on the judging of patterns, an introduction to the upcoming changes in pattern scoring, and use of the electronic scoring system which is in use at the ITF World Championships, and gradually making its way around to many ITF competitions around the world.
In attendance at the seminar were 55 participants from various schools, both local and out-of-state. The comments of the many participants offered great praise for Mr. Ottesen, whose teaching techniques offered clear, detailed explanations for all questions, and demonstrated an extraordinary level of knowledge, put forth with the ideal combination of professionalism and wit.
Master Ruben Suarez would like to offer a tremendous thank you to Mr. Ottesen, who has repeatedly offered outstanding collaboration with Queens Taekwon-do Center, and continues to share his extensive knowledge with the great family of ITF Taekwon-do.
